Auckland Acute Services Hospital

Healthy sign

Over 70,000 square metres on 9 floors. 19,800 light fittings (124 different types) were used for this hospital in New Zealand. The Acute Services Hospital is one of New Zealand’s largest buildings by floor area, it combines the In patient Services of three previously separate hospitals (Auckland, Greenlane and National Women’s) into one building on its Grafton Road site.

Thorn were presented with the challenge of providing a total cost effective package, developing options to cover all types of applications for various environments in one project. To answer all of the requirements, the task involved designing "special" products.

Products used include:

  • Bed head fittings
  • Cove lighting
  • Nitelite/signs
  • Corridor fittings
  • Theatre fittings

A number of features in the building design were included for efficiency. These include combining systems where possible and automated building systems to reduce waste.

Environmental efficiencies include conversion of a coal-fired central boiler to gas, which has reduced the hospital’s CO2 emissions by 10,000 tonnes per year. A dual water supply system uses rainwater and bore water for non-potable water supply (flushing) with an on-going cost saving.

The result is a design that has incorporated international best practice. It sets the standard for other hospital design in New Zealand and has earned the project a nomination in the 2004 INNOVATE NZ Awards of excellence.
