Indoor Sports Lighting


With experience of lighting some of the biggest names in sport, Thorn can provide the perfect lighting solution for any indoor sporting facility. Lighting sporting events and facilities brings in a host of considerations, including lighting the field of play for both sportsperson and spectator alike, avoiding obtrusive light that may impede a player's performance, and ensuring that there is correct and sufficient safety lighting to allow movement of players and viewers in an emergency.

Advanced lighting controls for multi-purpose stadium
Few sports require quicker reactions and more critical visual quality than ice hockey. Imagine trying to see, let alone stop a 170 gram (6 oz) chunk of vulcanised rubber, travelling at nearly 160 km/h (100 mph). This was just one of the aspects considered when planing the lighting for the Malmö Arena, a 12,500-seater, multi-purpose indoor stadium

The Snow Centre
All lit up at The Snow Centre
Britain’s latest indoor real snow slope – The Snow Centre at Hemel Hempstead, is a spectacular attraction by any standards. Constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine the building boasts a 160m long, 30m wide, main run of real snow for regular skiers and boarders and a 100m nursery slope for beginners, the largest in the UK. The difficult task of lighting it was handled using an indirect / direct floodlighting approach.

When it was decided to improve the lighting of Spodek Katowice, Poland’s largest indoor multi-purpose arena, the design team worked hard to evolve modern, dynamic, lighting levels suitable for HDTV coverage without destroying the thrilling atmosphere.
