Other Lighting Applications

Millennium Centre, Cardiff

In these stones horizons sing

This iconic building in Cardiff, Wales is a cultural centre which required a lighting scheme that enhanced the architectural and cultural status of the building. Jonathan Adams, coupled with the design engineering expertise of Ove Arup, has devised a lighting scheme that enhances the architectural and cultural status of the building.

At night, the most dramatic lighting comes from within, blazing through the large inscription window over the main entrance, each letter of which stands over 2m tall.

Concealed fluorescent Popular Pack battens backlight what appears to be fissures of crystal splitting the layers of slate. Further hidden high frequenct fluorescents are used to create the effect of illuminated slices throughout the building, running along the ceilings and down the walls.

Thorn luminaires were used throughout each area demanding specialist lighting.

From the entrance foyer through to the lower concourse areas, a ‘random starry night’ effect is created by the scattering of thousands of small unobtrusive 50W low voltage halogen downlights, which are fully dimmable for different scene setting. Additional recessed downlights are used within the main lyric theatre for the circle areas.

The scenary street are lit with a combination of Aquaforce water and dust resisting fluorescents and Lopak low bays.

The URDD lounge required 80 Glorie ceiling luminaires and the Diversion studios are lit by slim T5 Micropaks.

The venue’s emergency lighting is looked after by no fewer than 1210 Voyager exit signs, integrated Chalice downlights and Popular Pack battens.
