Parc y Scarlets

Mundials light Wales' newest sports stadium

“One of the finest bespoke rugby stadia in Europe”: The Scarlets’ claim can really be appreciated when seeing the magnificent stands, hospitality and training facilities at the team’s new Parc y Scarlets ground in Llanelli, recently lit with Thorn products. The £24million development is a joint venture between the Carmarthenshire County Council and the Rugby Club, and forms the centrepiece of a wider regeneration strategy for the area.

It’s along the main south stand that 40 Thorn Mundial floodlights have been installed by Whitehead Building Services, one of the UK’s leading building services contractors. Opposite a further 44 floodlights are mounted on two 26m high corner towers. The towers feature iconic semi-circular head frames to create a signature look, similar to that of the KC Stadium in Hull – also floodlit by Thorn.

By employing high colour rendering 2kW Osram HQI-TS WDS short arc metal halide lamps the system is ideal for colour television transmissions (Ra 90+); it also provides excellent spectator – and player viewing. Altogether the floodlighting achieves approximately 750 lux horizontally with 0.7 min/ave 0.5 min/max uniformity. Action is brillantly visble, from one post to the other.

The complex also includes a training pitch, complete with athletics track, which is lit by 1kW Champion floodlights.  Within the facility Chalice downlights and rows of IndiQuattro recessed fluorescents and Virgule spotlights illuminate the shop, museum, foyer and hospitality areas.

The stadium, also used by Llanelli RFC and more recently by the Football Association of Wales, has replaced Stradey Park, the home of Llanelli rugby for almost 130 years. Capacity is 14,870 (11,000 for soccer).

Architect for the scheme was The Miller Partnership and Andrew Scott Ltd of Port Talbot were the main contractors.
