Malmö Stadium

Thorn service on the ball

Thorn achieves high performance (to UEFA standards) as well as restriction of stray light and limitation of glare for Malmö Stadium, home to Malmö FF, Sweden’s most successful football club. When Malmö’s Sport and Leisure Administration decided to upgrade the city’s stadium, originally built for Sweden to host the 1958 World Football Championship and upgraded 34 years later for the European Football Championships, into an arena suitable for modern UEFA standards, the lighting obviously had to change.

Good colour rendering suitable for TV coverage and a high level of illuminance (1400 lux, as against 650 lux for the old system) were clear priorities.

They asked Thorn’s lighting designer, Anders Kristensson, to suggest several alternative schemes and as a result chose to install 184 high performance 2kW Mundial floodlights on existing masts.

It was not simply the high lumen output of the floodlights which prompted the choice. With the stadium situated by the beautiful Pildammsparken recreation area restriction of stray light and limitation of glare was a key factor and the Mundial’s precision optics provided the answer.

The management team for the stadium also recognised the benefits of Thorn’s help with planning, preparation, delivery, aiming and commissioning.
