An international group of companies from the lighting industry – including Acuity Brands Lighting, Cooper Lighting, OSRAM, Panasonic, Philips, Schréder, Toshiba, TRILUX and Zumtobel Group (Thorn's parent company) – is to initiate the formation of Zhaga, an industry-wide cooperation aimed at the development of standard specifications for the interfaces of LED light engines.

The Borough of Mäder in western Austria has cut its energy consumption on road lighting by 49 per cent while simultaneously improving illumination levels. This startling information is revealed by the Borough’s Mayor, Rainer Siegele, in Thorn’s road lighting microsite. The dedicated site features specific individuals and municipalities who care about lighting and how their communities have benefited from using the latest equipment.

As part of its commitment to sustainable development, Thorn has another production plant certified in accordance with the environmental management standard ISO 14001. The environmental audit at the lighting brand’s largest luminaire production facility - at its home base in Spennymoor, northeast England - was successfully completed during the summer of 2009.

Lib Dem MEP for the North East, Fiona Hall, an energy efficiency specialist on the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee, visited Thorn's Spennymoor plant on Monday 18 May 2009, to hear about their continued commitment to both developing energy saving light fittings and also educating the professional market on the benefits of energy saving products, in the company’s drive to take the least efficient energy using light fittings off the market.

The winning schemes were announced on 19th May at the Federations’ AGM in London.

When the MP for Bishop Auckland, Helen Goodman, opened the Thorn Academy of Light at Spennymoor, County Durham today, she described it as ‘fantastic news.’ Helen Goodman, who was welcomed by Andreas Ludwig, CEO of Thorn’s parent company Zumtobel Group said: “I am particularly pleased that the new site will include the Academy of Light training facility, which will help to maintain skills.”
