Outdoor Sports Lighting

IBU Biathlon World Championships, Östersund

"White" nights in Sweden

Östersund, Sweden's world-renowned winter sports capital, chooses Thorn to floodlight its new facilities for the 42nd IBU Biathlon World Championships (February 8-17). The events at Östersund were televised by Sveriges TV and viewed by 200 million people worldwide. This necessitated higher than average lighting levels to meet the stringent demands of night-time HD-CTV transmissions - it gets dark early in winter there.

The extended lighting scheme comprises of 348 Mundial floodlights with "white" 2kW metal halide HQI-TS lamps. The floods are mounted on existing columns (12-40m), along the cross-country ski stadium and secondary areas – illuminating an area large enough for over three soccer pitches.

Performance
Before their installation great consideration had to be given to the light reflecting from the snow, and a lux of about 1,000 vertical was achieved against the numerous CTV positions.

Efficiency
Most floodlights are asymmetric for better beam control (and hence less stray light), with some narrow beam symmetrical types for long throw work. They have to withstand rigorous sub-zero temperatures along the shore of Lake Storsjön in west central Sweden.

Comfort
Better floodlighting improves safety standards, encourages performers and gives the increased crowd more of what they came to see. More than 100,000 people visited the games, breaking all records.

The lighting contractor for the project was Johnssons El of Åre.
