Thorn Champion floodlights are a winner at Marley Sports Activities and Coaching Centre

Thorn Lighting rose to the challenge when asked to supply the lighting for a full size floodlit "3rd generation FieldTurf" football pitch at Marley Activities and Coaching Centre in Keighley, West Yorkshire (UK). A good relationship between Thorn and the local Bradford Metropolitan Council was established around 18 months prior to this, whilst working on a lighting scheme for their Head Office site at Britannia House, which delivered a POE (Power over Ethernet) lighting solution with over 200 high grade LED panels.

The refurbishment of Marley Activities and Coaching Centre was instigated following a report into the district’s sports facilities released last year, which shone a critical light on the declining state of public pitches and fields, with sports clubs pointing to poor maintenance. The Centre includes eight grass football pitches, a junior size football grass pitch and mini soccer grass pitch, a synthetic cricket wicket, an indoor sports hall, a 3rd generation FieldTurf" football pitch, and 25 changing rooms. The overall project upgrade was completed at a cost of £280,000, with funding secured by Bradford Council.

For the lighting, utilising the arrangement of the existing columns with a wider than average pitch was challenging to calculate, but Thorn’s team suggested a winning combination of optics with Champion LED high performance floodlights. These were chosen for the upgrade to replace the outdated fluorescent solution with the latest LED technology, thus improving the quality of illumination and increasing energy savings. Champion floodlights deliver 65° asymmetrical light distribution from 264 LEDs, with an IP66 and an impact strength of IK08. Ideal for sports fields and stadium or area lighting, Champion floodlights have low flicker operation (<1%), making them suitable for HDTV broadcasting and utilising 4000K LED with a colour rendering index of 70 minimum.
