Food for thought – The big challenge with the IoT at the moment isn’t so much how to implement, it as what to do with all the data.

Image1We have the capability to gather data from cameras, temperatures sensors, device diagnostics, air quality sensors, light sensors, presence sensors… These technologies are all already here. But what is the application, what value does it bring, and what systems and processes do we need to unlock that value? These are the questions clients are wrestling with. We’re seeing cities experimenting in IoT technology, running trials, in some cases investing quite a lot in new technology, without always having a clear idea of what it’s going to do for them.

There are ways that cities can futureproof installations to keep your options open with regard to the IoT, and make sure you’re ready for whatever you may want to implement in future. Wireless control systems can be used to carry other kinds of data apart from just commands for lights, and outdoor luminaires can be designed with the ability for additional wiring and components to be added, to enable intelligence and data collection at a later date.

Did you know? Our sister brand Zumtobel Group Services (ZGS) offers a service portfolio for the entire lighting sector. It brings all service offerings of the Zumtobel Group together under one single roof. Thereby, ZGS shapes the connectivity and services market in lighting.
