The new Chongqing Longxing Football Stadium was originally designed for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. As well as being one of the biggest stadiums in the country, it is capable of hosting the most prestigious sporting competition events and is located in the city of Chongqing which has the largest population in western China.

Thorn Lighting has enjoyed working on many projects with China Construction 8th Engineering Division Corporation, and was pleased to assist with this new stadium lighting project from the beginning.

Project Manager Luke Zhang said, “Thorn Lighting was involved in this project since the spec-in stage and the lighting solution we provided perfectly met with the technical requirements needed to achieve FIFA Lighting Standard A & AFC Lighting Category 1.”

In addition to lighting design, Thorn assisted in the installation and commissioning of the lighting solution, using more than 400 Champion floodlights, making Chongqing Longxing Stadium the first one to have been completed and delivered among the 8 new stadiums which were meant for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and which were commenced construction during the same period.

But why was this luminaire chosen? “Champion was selected as the lighting solution for this project thanks to its technical qualities for TV broadcasting. It has a colour rendering index (CRI) up to 90 and a colour temperature of 5700K. The R9 CRI of Champion is greater than 70, which is far higher than the standard requirements for normal TV broadcasting (20) and 4K high-definition TV broadcasting (40). In addition, the Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI) is up to 90, and the Flicker index <1%,” Luke explained.

The luminaires were installed on both the inside and outside of the tracks, avoiding areas where FIFA standard and JGJ153-2016 standard are not recommended, so as to reduce glare to athletes. The distance between luminaires is 1.5m, which ensures that the luminaires will not block the light from neighbouring luminaires and also achieves a continuous and uniform lit effect. The aiming angle of the luminaires is less than 60 degrees. By accurately adjusting the aiming direction of each set of luminaire, the final maximum glare is 31.6, which is far less than 40 which was a requirement of the customer.

“Thanks to Champion floodlights and the support from everyone involved in this project, from design right through to installation, we have achieved a lighting solution that is of a very high standard technically, and will undoubtedly be recognised as one of the most significant stadium lighting projects in western China.”
